Beyond the Big House

Step inside the back buildings and former work lots of Charleston’s private houses.  Kitchens, carriage houses and slave dwellings have survived to tell the stories of the enslaved in Charleston, their lives and labor. Explore six of these noteworthy buildings and learn how they have been re-used and preserved by the current owners. The tour includes the outbuildings of the renowned Miles Brewton House, c.1765, a National Historic Landmark. The property’s extensive collection of dependencies makes it one of the most complete Georgian townhouse complexes in America.

Following the tour, discover more about the history, achievements and daily lives of African Americans in antebellum Charleston with professional interpreters and storytellers in the back lot of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, where the original kitchen, laundry, carriage house and slave quarters survive.

• 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm | Self-paced walking tour begins in the garden of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, where you will pick up a map with tour site locations.*
• 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm | Storytelling in the back lot of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street.

*The self-paced walking tour will cover several city blocks with uneven sidewalks. Please wear flat, comfortable shoes and bring bottled water. You will be met at each site by trained docents (guides). To check-in for the tour, bring your ticket receipt to the garden of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, between 1:15-2:15 p.m. on September 16.
